Belgia, Hollandi, Itaalia, Luksemburgi, Prantsusmaa, Saksamaa ja Suurbritannia sõjaline ning poliitiline liit
European defence and security organisation, established on the basis of the Treaty of Brussels of 1948
Hea teada
In 2000 its crisis management capacity was transferred to the EU and only a residual structure remains.
Selle tähtsus on vähenenud, kuna Euroopa Liidu liikmesriigid tihendasid Lissaboni lepinguga koostööd kaitse- ja kriisiohje valdkonnas.
1990 liitusid Hispaania ja Portugal, 1995 Kreeka. 2001 anti suurem osa WEU ülesandeid üle EL-ile. Eesti on aastast 1994 WEU-ga assotsieerunud partnerriik.
The Western European Union (WEU) is an integral part of the development of the Union providing the Union with access to an operational capability notably in the context of paragraph 2.
WEU was created by the Treaty on Economic, Social and Cultural Collaboration and Collective Self-Defence signed at Brussels on 17 March 1948 (the Brussels Treaty), as amended by the Protocol signed at Paris on 23 October 1954, which modified and completed it.
The WEU organs are undergoing a process of liquidation and closure. WEU will cease to exist as a Treaty-based International Organisation on 30 June 2011.
