The solvency coefficient of credit institutions (1). The main purpose of the solvency ratio Directive is to harmonize the prudential supervision and to strengthen solvency standards among Community credit institutions, thereby protecting both depositors and investors as well as maintaining banking stability. The principle is that a credit institution shall hold own funds equal to at least 8% of the risk-adjusted values of its assets and off-balance sheet business. This calculation is meant to capture the inherent credit risk in the banking business (2).
