Most oceanic air-ground communications are conducted on frequencies in the high frequency (HF) band. At present pilots normally communicate on HF with the oceanic area control centres (OAC) via ground communication stations which are not necessarily co-located with the OAC and messages must therefore be relayed, mostly by teletype, between the ground station and the relevant OAC.
