Maailma riigid, sealhulgas Eesti, leppisid 2005. aasta septembris ÜRO tippkohtumisel kokku aastatuhande arengueesmärgid. Koos 2000. aastal vastuvõetud aastatuhande deklaratsiooniga moodustavad need otsused rahvusvaheliselt kokkulepitud eesmärgid, mis arengukoostööga seotud aspektides on kitsamalt sätestatud ÜRO aastatuhande arengueesmärkidena.
The goals, based on priorities set out in the United Nations Millennium Declaration, adopted by the General Assembly in 2000 (resolution 55/2) are:
Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education; Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women; Goal 4: Reduce child mortality; Goal 5: Improve maternal health; Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases; Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability; Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development.
The eight MDGs range from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015.
