  • a navigation information system which can be accepted as complying with the up-to-date chart required by regulation V/20 of the 1974 SOLAS Convention, by displaying selected information from a system electronic navigational chart (SENC) with positional information from navigation sensors to assist the mariner in route planning and route monitoring, and if required display additional navigation-related information. The performance requirements for ECDIS are defined in the Performance Standard for ECDIS developed by IMO/IHO HGE (Harmonized Group on ECDIS).

Usage examples
  • Chart radar - Electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS) backup
  • The Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) is an emerging technology that has a significant potential to benefit maritime piloting and increase safety. An ECDIS is a real-time Geographic Information System (GIS) that combines both chart and sensor information into a real-time navigation tool. An ECDIS continuously determines a vessel's position in relation to land, charted objects and unseen hazards. How does ECDIS work? More than a graphics display, electronic charts can be real-time navigation systems that combine charting, positioning, and textual data into a readily useful operational tool. Any type of electronic chart that functions as a real-time navigation system has four basic components: Computer processor Digital database (ie. electronic chart data) Navigation sensor inputs (ie. GPS, Loran) Colour display. Additional shipboard sensor inputs may include ship's gyrocompass, depth sounder, marine radar, or an Automated Radar Piloting Aid (ARPA).
