Caprine arthritis-encephalitis is a fatal, widespread multisystemic inflammatory disease which is responsible for major production loss in goats. The causative agent of the disease, caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus (CAEV), is a lentivirus within the group of small ruminant lentivirus (SRLV) in the family Retroviridae.
