Ebola viirus (neid on viis liiki) avastati 1976. aastal Kongo Demokraatlikus Vabariigis (endine Zair). Nime sai ta sealse Ebola jõe järgi. Ebola viiruste looduslikud peremehed on nahkhiired, nakkusallikaks on ka šimpansid, gorillad jt loomad.
