SRU ülesanded on järgmised: •teha sündmuskohal SAR-i, •transportida vajaduse korral sündmuskohale merepäästevarustust ja muid vahendeid, •anda kannatanu(te)le esmaabi ja vajaduse korral osutada muud abi, •toimetada kannatanud ohutusse kohta, •täita SMC-lt saadud korraldusi ja •tagada SRU enda ohutus.

Search and rescue units (SRUs) involved are typically fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, surface vessels, and specialized units (e.g. urban search and rescue teams, rescue dog specialists, or teams specially trained for glacier walking or mountain rescue) using tracked vehicles, snowmobiles, or other specialized means of transportation.
SAR operations are conducted by SAR units. They are elements of public or private services designated by the states and are composed of trained personnel and provided with appropriate equipment (including appropriate communication eqiupment). They may be complemented by other units that do not qualify as SAR units but are nevertheless able to participate in such operations.
