Kui rullpilv tekib seoses rünksajupilvega, siis on selle põhjuseks laskuvad õhuvoolud, mille põrkel aluspinnaga võib tekkida õhulaine. Laineharjal tekibki rullpilv, mille üleminekuga võib kaasneda tugev tuulepuhang (pagi). Rullpilv võib tekkida ka iseseisvalt. Selle näiteks on Austraalia põhjaosas Carpentaria lahe kohal tekkiv ebatavaline ilmanähtus – „hommikuhiilgus“ (Morning Glory Cloud), mille tekkimine on seotud rannikualade ja seal tekkivate briisidega.

Roll clouds are relatively rare; they are completely detached from the thunderstorm base or other cloud features, thus differentiating them from the more familiar shelf clouds. Roll clouds usually appear to be "rolling" about a horizontal axis, but should not be confused with funnel clouds.
