  • a heterocyclic compound consisting of a benzene ring condensed with a pyridine ring. It is a colourless, oily liquid, mp -19.5 °C, bp 240°C, relative density 1.08, of characteristic odour, insoluble in water, soluble in most organic solvents. It is found in coaltar, in bone oil and in the products of the destructive distillation of manyl alkaloids. It can be synthesized by heating a mixture of aniline, glycerine and nitrobenzene with concentrated sulphuric acid.
