  • a mixture with air under atmospheric conditions of flammable substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist, in such proportions that it can be exploded by excessive temperature, arcs or sparks (the danger is a real one). In some contexts, a distinction has to be made between explosive and potentially explosive atmospheres, an atmosphere which could be explosive (the danger is a potential one).
