Nt sõnal kõva on „Eesti kirjakeele seletussõnaraamatu” järgi 14 tähendust, sõnal kange 7, aga ainult kolmes neist on kõva ja kange sünonüümid: a) ‘kehajõult tugev’ (Poisid katsusid jõudu: kumb on kangem = kõvem); b) ‘väga tugev, suur’ (Jalga lõi kange = kõva valu); c) ‘millegi poolest silmatorkav või väljapaistev, tubli, hakkaja’ (kange = kõva töömees, kõnemees, jahimees).
‘Partial’ synonyms have meanings identical in some contexts, or identical only in that replacing one with the other does not change the truth conditions of a specific sentence.

Thus paper is a partial synonym of article: compare I got my paper published, I got my article published. But their synonymy is not absolute: e.g. paper, but not article, can also be used to refer to a newspaper.
