Prepositioning afloat also allows for forward prepositioning of sustainment stocks, unit equipment, and port opening capabilities on Military Sealift Command vessels home based in Diego Garcia and Guam. The vessels can be sailed worldwide in response to any contingency. Prepositioning afloat is limited by cost, loss of capability during periodic maintenance, reception port capabilities, and sailing time.
