Indeksiridu võidakse kujundada kahel viisil: alus- ehk baasindeksid arvutatakse ühe võrdlusaluse, nt uuritava nähtuse 1913., 1939. või 1950. a. taseme suhtes, ahelindeksite võrdlusalus on alati eelmine periood (aasta).
