  • an optical effect in which a single frame is identically repeated over several frames causing the action to stop and giving the illusion of a still photograph. Often used at the end of a film to indicate ambiguity, death or to provide a lasting image. (Griffiths, 2015) Examples: the ending of "Les quatre cents coups" (1959), "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (1969), "The Breakfast Club" (1985), "The Color of Money" (1986)) In the screenplay always typed in capital letters.
