The purpose is to defeat the enemy’s forces by avoiding his main effort through directing the main force at the enemy’s flank. This form of manoeuvre aims at surprising the enemy and catching him at weaker points. Commanders defeat the enemy by a flanking attack whenever possible. It should be the preferred form of manoeuvre at brigade level and below.This form of manoeuvre often requires that the enemy is fixed in his main effort. Fixing actions and the main attack against the flank need to be closely coordinated in terms of movement and fire, because they are conducted often in spatially close connection.
