  • a component of drama (an object, a character, a twist of fate, a feeling, etc) set in opposition to the achievement of an objective, thereby creating conflict. [...] External obstacle: an obstacle which has no relation whatsoever with the character whose objective it opposes. External, with internal origin: an obstacle which is external to a character but for which he is responsible. Internal: part of character's nature (usually psychological) that forms a source of obstacles in his pursuit of an objective. (Lavandier, 2005) Obstacles occur throughout the entire script but are thought of as the building blocks of the second act. Each sequence has it’s own conflict, it’s own obstacle, and the obstacles continue to increase in difficulty as we move forward with the story. (International Screenwriters' Association, 2017)
