"a crime story which relies on mystery for its effect (Lavandier, 2005). Regardless of their genres and sub-genres, contemporary mysteries all contain the same elements: 1. The puzzle. Who did it? 2. Detection, i.e. the investigation. 3. The sleuth as the protagonist. 4. The worthy villain. 5. Fair play, i.e. all of the evidence uncovered by the sleuth, in the form of clues, is equally available to the reader. The climactic revelation presents no evidence that hasn’t already been disclosed in the course of the story. 6. Realism and logic.
