Council Directive 86/653/EEC, on self-employed commercial agents, sets up a legal regime for the relationship between a principal and his agent. An agent is a self-employed person or a company who negotiates the sale or the purchase of goods on behalf of another person, who under the Directive is referred to as the principal.
