  • the representation of persons [character trait indicators] in narrative and dramatic works. (Baldick, 2001, p. 37) We can distinguish between two kinds of character indicator in the text: 1. Direct definition means that a character is characterized in a direct, summarizing way [description or commentary] – for instance by means of adjectives or abstract nouns. A special variant of direct definition is the assigning of names to characters. 2. Indirect presentation. Rather than naming it explicitly this form of characterization demonstrates, dramatizes, or exemplifies a given character feature, (Lothe, 2000, pp. 81-84) inviting readers to infer qualities from characters' actions, speech, or appearance (Baldick, 2001, p. 37). Also milieu or external (physical/topographic) surroundings may variously contribute to the indirect presentation of a character. (Lothe, 2000, p. 84) Also see character, stock character, type.
