1. Mõõtmiste usaldatavus ja jälgitavus saavutatakse Rahvusvahelisele Mõõtühikute Süsteemile (SI) vastavate mõõtühikute ja nende etalonide kasutamise, mõõtevahendite metroloogilise kontrolli ja mõõtmisi teostavate laborite akrediteerimise kaudu. Käesoleva seaduse tähenduses on akrediteerimine labori kompetentsuse ametlik tunnustamine kindlate mõõtmiste sooritamiseks.
2. Vabariigi Valitsus delegeerib sihtasutuste seaduse alusel asutatud sihtasutusele järgmised ülesanded: mõõtmisi ja mõõtevahendite metroloogilist kontrolli teostavate laborite kompetentsuse hindamine ja/või akrediteerimine ning järelevalve hinnatud ja akrediteeritud laborite tegevuse üle.
