slot
Usage examples
  • The coordinator shall be the sole person responsible for the allocation of slots. He shall allocate the slots in accordance with the provisions of this Regulation and shall make provision so that, in an emergency, slots can also be allocated outside office hours.
  • Not all airports use slots. There is simply no need when the airport is well below capacity. All airports are categorized by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) as Level 1 (non-coordinated airport), Level 2 (slot facilitated airport) or Level 3 (coordinated airport). At level 1 and 2 airports, formal ‘slots’ are not required and arrivals and departures are managed by the airport and through cooperation between airlines. At a level 3 airport, the number of flights and available airport infrastructure mean closer management is needed – and slots are used.
airport slot
Usage examples
  • An airport slot gives an airline the right to operate at an airport at particular times. They are used when the airport is constrained, either by the runway throughput (such as Heathrow) or by the available parking space (such as at a number of Greek island airports). These slots may be traded and can be very valuable – one was sold in 2016 for a record amount of $75 million.
