  • Apparently an initialism < either Research Department Explosive, or Research Department X (with X standing arbitrarily for a newly developed substance). The explosive was manufactured at the Research Department of the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, England.
  • The name RDX was coined by the British. This name was accepted in the United States, although the name cyclonite was also commonly used there. The Germans called it hexogen, and the Italians called it T4.
