Suhteline tihedus on üksühikuga suurus, mis on määratletud aine tiheduse ja võrdlusaine tiheduse suhtena. Tänapäeval on suhteline tihedus (lühendid RD või r.d.) eelisterminiks ja seda kasutavad nt ISO, IUPAC ja NIST.

Vedelike suhtelist tihedust mõõdetakse peaaegu alati kõige tihedama vee suhtes (4 °C juures) ja gaaside puhul on võrdlusaluseks õhk toatemperatuuril (20 °C).
The relative density, also called specific gravity, is a quantity with unit one defined as the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of a given reference material. The term "relative density" (abbreviated RD or r.d.) is preferred modern use, for example in ISO, IUPAC, and NIST.

Relative density for liquids is nearly always measured with respect to water at its densest (at 4 °C), and for gases, the reference is air at room temperature (20 °C).
