  • hoatsiiniliste seltsi kuuluv lind. Ühtlasi on ta ainus liik hoatsiinlaste sugukonnas ja hoatsiini perekonnas.
    Good to know
    • See suleline on liigitatud täiesti omaette rühma. Tema kõige silmatorkavamaks iseärasuseks on tõsiasi, et hoatsiinitibudel on tiivanukkide küljes säilinud küünistepaar, millega saab tihedas puuvõras ronida ja toetust otsida. Selliste küüniste olemasolu on peetud tõsiseks evolutsiooniliseks tõenduseks lindude põlvnemisele roomajatest.
  • an odd-looking, leaf-eating bird that nests in branches overhanging lakes and slow-moving streams in the Neotropics; it is the only member of its order and family (Opisthocomidae)
    Good to know
    • Large, dumpy bird found around lake edges and slow-moving streams. Head looks too small for its large brown body. Its orange mohawk, blue facial skin, and stubby bill make this bird extremely distinctive. Usually found in groups or pairs. Moves clumsily around waterside vegetation, making loud huffing noises.

Usage examples
  • Although several other species are known from the fossil record, the only extant representative of the Opisthocomidae is the Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin). The Hoatzin is a pheasant-sized bird of the Amazon and Orinoco basins which feeds on leaves and fruit and is noted for the wing-claws possessed by the young birds. Uniquely among birds, it uses fermentation in its digestive system to break down its vegetable diet, similar to the method used by cattle and other ruminant mammals.
Good to know
  • Official English names of birds are capitalized, as is the current practice in ornithology (e.g., Yellow-throated Warbler).
