  • the retrovirus implicated as the cause of AIDS. The names "lymphadenopathy-associated virus" (LAV) and "human T-cell lymphotropic virus type III" (HTLV-III), and the combined abbreviation LAV/HTLV-III, should no longer be used. The recommended name should preferably be written out in full on its first occurrence in a given text, thus:" human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)"; the abbreviation alone may be used thereafter. It should be noted that, whereas "immune deficiency" has become usual in the full title of AIDS (q.v.) as given in British English, the more Latinized, scientific formulation "immunodeficiency" continues to be used in relation to the virus.
