Usage examples
  • Diklorodifenüültrikloroetaan ehk 1,1,1-trikloro-2,2-bis(p-klorofenüül)etaan (DDT) on laialdaselt kasutatud insektsiid. DDT sünteesiti 1874.aastal Saksamaal. Tema insektsiidsed omadused avastati Paul Mülleri poolt 1930. aastate lõpus, kaubandusmüük sai alguse 1945. aastal ja DDT-d hakati laialdaselt kasutama põllumajanduses kahjurputukate arvukuse kontrolli all hoidmiseks. DDT keelustati paljudes maades 1970. aastatel (Huang et al 2008).
DDT abbreviation
dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane preferred
Good to know
  • It was used during the Second World War to control the spread of typhus and malaria by insects, and was widely used as an agricultural pesticide during the 1950s and 1960s. It has been banned in the US since 1973 as a result of growing public concern because of its persistence in the environment and accumulation in the food chain. It particularly damaged the peregrine falcon, whose numbers declined rapidly because DDT was causing the birds' egg shells to become thin and the eggs to break before hatching.
