(1) Riiklik ekspertiisiasutus (edaspidi ka ekspertiisiasutus) on riigiasutus, mille tegevuse põhieesmärk on teha ekspertiise. Lisaks on ekspertiisiasutus riikliku ja rahvusvahelise kohtuekspertiisialase teadmuse keskus, mis tegeleb ka arendus- ja teadustegevusega, võrdlusnäidiste kogude ja registrite haldamisega ning on rahvusvahelises teabevahetuses pädev asutus, kui see on seaduses nimetatud.
