(2) Teadlane on spetsialist, kes loob teaduslike meetoditega uusi teadmisi, täiustab ja arendab kontseptsioone, teooriaid, mudeleid, instrumente ja tehnoloogiaid, tarkvara ja töömeetodeid ning suurendab inimest, kultuuri, ühiskonda, tehnikat või loodust käsitlevate teadmiste hulka. Ülikoolis, rakenduskõrgkoolis, riigi või avalik-õiguslikus teadus- ja arendusasutuses akadeemilise töötaja ametikohal töötavale teadlasele kohaldatakse kõrgharidusseaduses akadeemiliste töötajate kohta sätestatut.
