§ 1. Erakonna mõiste` (1) Erakond (partei) on Eesti kodanike vabatahtlik poliitiline ühendus, mille eesmärgiks on oma liikmete ja toetajaskonna poliitiliste huvide väljendamine ning riigivõimu ja kohaliku omavalitsuse teostamine, ning mis on registreeritud käesolevas seaduses sätestatud korras. (2) Erakond on eraõiguslik juriidiline isik. Erakonnale kohaldatakse mittetulundusühingute seadust käesolevast seadusest tulenevate erisustega.

(2) A political party is a legal person in private law. The Non-profit Associations Act applies to political parties with the specifications arising from this Act.
