Dysfunctional Parent Modes reflect the selective internalization of negative aspects of attachment figures (e.g., parents, teachers, peers, etc.) during childhood and adolescence.
These modes have in common an internalized parental "voice" that criticizes or denigrates the patient (Punitive Parent) or places almost impossible demands on him (Demanding or Critical Parent).
Dysfunctional parent modes are viewed as internalizations of dysfunctional parental responses to the child. Conceptually, these modes overlap with the notion of (perpetrator) introjects in psychodynamic theory.
