The Maladaptive Coping modes represent the child’s attempts to adapt to living with unmet emotional needs in a harmful environment. These coping modes were adaptive when the patient was a young child, but they are often maladaptive in the wider adult world.
Schema therapy distinguishes three types of maladaptive coping modes: The detached protector, the Compliant surrender and the Overcompensator modes. These modes correspond to the maladaptive coping styles of schema avoidance, surrender and overcompensation, respectively. In contrast to the coping styles, however, which focus solely on coping behaviors, the coping modes are emotional states that involve emotions, cognitions,and behavioral responses that are active at a given moment, when early maladaptive schemas have been triggered.
Maladaptive Coping Modes, a third category of mode, are defined by an overuse of unhealthy coping styles (fight –overcompensation; flight – avoidance; or freeze – surrender). All have the goal of protecting the person from experiencing pain, anxiety, or fear.
