The indices of plane are related to the intercepts of that plane with axes on a unit cell (the symbols are h, k, l), the indices of a direction represent the coordinates of a point of a line parallel to the direction and passing through the arbitrarily chosen origin of a unit cell (the symbols are u, v, w).
