The execution of NATO military operations will often be guided by the supported/supporting relationship when one command, force or unit should aid, protect, complement or sustain another. In theory, the supported/supporting relationship works both ways, i.e. the supported commander must be able to participate and comment on the development of support plans by supporting commanders. A complete understanding of the supported commander’s mission, assigned objectives, force capabilities and intent is critical to enable the supporting commander to meet their responsibilities flexibly.
