a vegetation community that includes widely spread, mature trees. The tree crowns are typically more spreading in form than those of forest trees. Crowns do not touch and do not form a closed canopy. Woodland is often defined as having 40% canopy closure or less. Colloquially, the terms forest and woodland are often used interchangeably in Britain., natural or semi-natural vegetation containing trees, but not forming a continuous canopy, a collection of trees, shrubs, herbs, grasses etc., usually dominated by one or a few species of tree; usually smaller than a forest, area covered by woods and forests, including nurseries located in the forest as well as poplar plantations. Isolated trees, spinneys and avenues are not included as woodland, their areas being included with the land surrounding them.
