Kasutataivamad on soojuspaisumise põhjustatud aine ruumala (klaastermomeeter) .. muutusel põhinev termomeeter. Klaastermomeeter (vedeliktermomeeter, kraadiklaas) koosneb suhteliselt suure mahuga reservuaarist ja selle külge joodetud ühtlase siseläbimõõduga peenikesest paisumistorust. Paisuva ainena (täitevedelikuna) kasutatakse harilikult elavhõbedat, etanooli või metüülbenseeni.
