tragacanth gum, E 413, tragacanth , gum tragacanth
many tropical plants produce the gum sap for this adhesive sizing ingredient. It comes in hard chip form, but will become gelatinous when mixed with water, a popular sizing agent, obtained from certain varieties of Astragalus, a ‘gum’ or mucilaginous substance obtained from several species ofAstragulus, by natural exudation or incision, in the form of whitish strings or flakes, only partially soluble in water. Used in medicine (chiefly as a vehicle for drugs) and in the industrial arts. Also a similar substance obtained from Sterculia Tragacantha of W. Africa., sarnaneb kummiaraabikuga, kuid on eriti tugeva sidumisvõimega. Kasutatakse limainene ja emulsiooni tekitajana tekstiili- ja värvitööstuses ning farmaatsias.
