a drug that has the effect of stimulating the sympathetic nervous system. The actions of sympathomimetic drugs are adrenergic (resembling those of noradrenaline). Alpha-adrenergic stimulants, such as phenylephrine, constrict blood vessels in the skin and intestine and are used in nasal decongestants; beta-adrenergic drugs, such as salbutamol, salmeterol, and terbutaline, relax bronchial smooth muscle and are used as bronchodilators. Some beta-adrenergic drugs, e.g. ephedrine and isoprenaline, are less selective and also stimulate beta receptors in the heart, producing an increased heart rate; if used as bronchodilators, these drugs may have unwanted side-effects on the heart.
