a storage channel on disk or tape. On disks, tracks are concentric circles (hard and floppy disks) or spirals (CDs and videodiscs). On tapes, they are parallel lines. Their format is determined by the specific drive they are used in. On magnetic devices, bits are recorded as reversals of polarity in the magnetic surface. On CDs, bits are recorded as physical pits under a clear, protective layer.
Computer tapes: Nine track with a density of 1 600 or 6 250 BPI and EDCDIC or ASCII coding, preferably labelled. If labelled, an end-of-file code should be included.
