Ingliskeelses erialakeeles tehakse vahet mõistetel ’littering’ ja ’wild dumping’. ’Littering’ on n-ö käigult kaasaolevate asjade, enamasti pakendite, suitsukonide, närimiskummi jms ’mahapuistamine’, sageli siis ’väidetavalt’ seda ise märkamata’. ’Wild dumping’ on juba kahtluseta teadlik tegevus, üldiselt auto vm masinaga kuskile metsa või tühermaale veetud jäätmed (sh ehituspraht ja prügi). „litter“ - small refuse or waste materials carelessly dropped, esp in public places
Millions of tonnes of litter end up in the oceans, beaches, forests and other natural areas each year. Careless littering and poor waste management are most to blame, but the problem is party caused by the way we consume goods and packaging designed to be used briefly and discarded.
Littering has direct detrimental impacts on the environment and the wellbeing of citizens, and high clean-up costs are an unnecessary economic burden for society. The introduction of specific measures in waste management plans and proper enforcement by competent authorities should help eradicate this problem.
