Each species of wasp pollinates only one species of fig, and each fig species has its own wasp species to pollinate it. This extraordinary diversity of coevolution between figs and wasps has become so profound that neither organism can exist without the other.
The common fig Ficus carica is pollinated only by Blastophaga psenes.
Hästi on tuntud sugukond viigikireslased (Agaonidae), mille mõned liigid harrastavad äärmiselt oma-pärast vastastikuse abi suhet viigi-puudega: putukad tagavad viigipuu tolmlemise, viigipuu pakub tolmel-dajatele vastutasuks turvalise elu- ja söögikoha oma viljas.
Viigimari ja viigiherilane on koevolutsiooni parimaks näiteks. Taim ja putukas on enam kui 60 miljoni aasta jooksul justkui kokku kasvanud.
