The Fermilab Neutron Therapy Facility utilizes a beam of high energy neutrons to treat malignant tumors. The neutron beam is formed by bombarding a beryllium target with 66 MeV protons, which are deflected from Fermilab's linear accelerator. Patient's tumors are irradiated by placing the tumor volume accurately in the neutron beam and localizing the beam as closely as possible to the contours of the tumor using collimators.
