a glass pane consisting of a single layer of glass which has been subjected to special treatment to increase its mechanical strength and condition its fragmentations after shattering
toughened safety glass - glass which has been converted to safety glass by subjection to a process of heating and rapid cooling, so that, if fractured, it disintegrates into small pieces and, in addition, its liability to fracture under the action of external forces or changes of temperature is greatly reduced
safety glass - (1) Laminated glass ... (2) So-called toughened glass, formed by putting the surfaces into compression, either by chilling them with air jets from close to the softening point (thermal toughening), or by exchanging sodium ions in the surfaces for larger ions (chemical toughening). Stronger than untreated glass, with blunter fracture fragments, but toughness is unaffected. (3) glass incorporating wire mesh to hold fracture fragments in place, but weaker than plain glass.
