The placing on the market of jelly confectionery, including jelly mini-cups, containing E 425: Konjac: (i) Konjac gum (ii) Konjac glucomannane is suspended.
The National Food Agency warns about mini cup fruit jelly sweets containing an ingredient called Konjac. These sweets have caused numerous deaths by choking in Japan, Canada and the USA.
The sweets may be in different types of packaging, i.e. in bags or plastic containers with several other kinds of sweets. The sweets are also packed singly in mini-cups. The sweet may attach itself to the throat from which it is difficult to dislodge due to its size and consistency. These sweets have been for sale at least in Helsinki, in shops specialising in Asian foods, which have now recalled the products in stock from sale.
