sphygmomanometer - an instrument for measuring the arterial blood-pressure, an inflatable bag being applied to the arm and pressure increased to occlude the artery. On deflation the systolic blood pressure is that at which sounds are heard by auscultation over the artery as blood flow recommences. The diastolic blood pressure is that at which sounds due to flow turbulence disappear.
