The World Geodetic System defines a reference frame for the earth, for use in geodesy and navigation. The latest revision is WGS 84 dating from 1984 (last revised in 2004), which will be valid up to about 2010.
Eestis loetakse ETRS89 koordinaadid ja Ülemaailmse Geodeetilise Süsteemi 1984 (edaspidi WGS84) koordinaadid alates realisatsioonist WGS84 (G873) identseteks.
The World Geodetic System — 1984 (WGS-84) coordinate system is a Conventional Terrestrial System (CTS), realized by modifying the Navy Navigation Satellite System (NNSS), or TRANSIT, Doppler Reference Frame (NSWC 9Z-2), in origin and scale, and rotating it to bring its reference meridian into coincidence with the Bureau International de l’Heure (BIH)-defined zero meridian.
World Geodetic System — 1984 (WGS-84) shall be used as the horizontal (geodetic) reference system. Published aeronautical geographical coordinates (indicating latitude and longitude) shall be expressed in terms of the WGS-84 geodetic reference datum.
