The EC until 1995 used the NACE "Nomenclature des Activités dans la Communaut Europenne" classification for all contract announcements. Created in 1970 as a common industrial classification for EC countries, NACE was, in the past, used mainly for statistical purposes. For industrial activities, NACE has now been superseded by NACE Rev 1, and a parallel product classification consisting of six digits has been introduced: "CPA" - "Classification of Products by Activities".
