Kiudmultiobjektspektrograaf koosneb keerukast kiudoptilisest positsioneerimissüsteemist, mis on paigaldatud teleskoobi peafookusesse, kus kiudoptilised kiud juhivad valguse edasi kahe suure spektrograafini, millest igaüks kaalub ligi 3 000 kg. Kiudmultiobjektspektrograafi rakendatakse mitmes olulises uurimisprogrammis, mis käsitlevad muu hulgas galaktikate teket ja arengut ning tumeenergiat – viimast uuritakse universumi paisumiskiiruse mõõtmise kaudu.
The fibre multi-object spectrograph consists of a complex fibre-optic positioning system mounted at the prime focus of the telescope, where fibres are then fed to a pair of large spectrographs, each weighing nearly 3 000 kg. The instrument will be used for a number of key programmes, including galaxy formation and evolution and dark energy via a measurement of the rate at which the universe is expanding.
